Thailand: Bible Education Center and Fieldworkers
Type: Ecclesial Development & Preaching
Funding Need: $33,000 USD annually
The Bible Education Centre (BEC) in Chiang Mai opened in Jan 2012. It provides individual and group sessions on the Bible, English and English-through-the-Bible. Our objective is to teach important Bible principles and how to read and understand the Bible. By God’s grace, the BEC has been continuously staffed by Western fieldworkers since opening, partly through financial support of BEC fieldworkers by WCF. A continuing presence enables us to demonstrate commitment to the region and maintain relationships with our students and friends. A small number of friends have been coming to the BEC since we opened, two of whom have now been baptised:
Bro Ebenezer is 24 and from the small Lahu ethnic group. Born in Burma (Myanmar), Ebenezer moved to Chiang Mai in 2007 and was baptised in 2013 after 18 months of classes at the BEC. Ebenezer wishes to leverage his ongoing University studies in International Communication to help him to preach the gospel to others. Watch Ebenezer explain why he was baptised:
Sis Vicky was baptised 4 months after Ebenezer, aged 17. She had known fieldworkers since 2010 through her mother, who was translating at the BEC for the Karen ethnic group. The Karen are a persecuted people: 80% of the displaced persons camps ranging along the Thai-Burma border are Karen and many flee into Thailand. Hear Vicky explain why she was baptised:
In addition to teaching at the BEC, fieldworkers travel to centres in northern Thailand and Burma where our friends have introduced us to others. Fieldworkers have standing invitations to teach the Bible at these six or seven places. Fieldworker travel and BEC expenses in Chiang Mai amount to ~$12 000 per year. In addition we have benefited greatly from “White Fields” stipends paid by WCF to fieldworkers to enable them to travel to, and remain in, Thailand for preaching the gospel. Annually, we had received ~$8 000 for these stipends.
In 2014 the BEC began to stage a week-long Bible School, which was very successful, with both friends and brothers and sisters from parts of Burma and Thailand. Attendance at this year’s school is nearly double that of last year. The 2015 Bible School cost was ~$14 000, nearly $11 000 of which came from WCF.
In order to maintain and grow these programs, we request annual support of $33 000.
