Bukigai Nursery School is an Agape-sponsored project in Uganda. Taking advantage of having a few visitors over we decided to cross the boarder and pay the school a visit.
Bukigai is a happy place. The students have uniforms, pens and books, they are provided with nutritious food, they have well trained teachers who are enthusiastic and energetic and most importantly- who love God and share that passion with their students.
As we pull into the driveway of Bukigai nursery school we are met by a group of dancing and singing brethren and sisters excitedly welcoming us. The school is based at the ecclesial hall with a few extra classrooms, admin room and kitchen attached. Our tour of the premises doesn’t take long and we soon settle in the ecclesial hall for introductions, praise, prayer and supper.
This was the start of our two day visit to Bukigai nursery school and was very typical of our stay there. The brethren and sisters were extremely welcoming and hospitable. Sisters sleeping on the floor of the kitchen in order to be able to get up early and prepare our breakfast, the kitchen constantly ringing with their beautiful singing as they prepared food for everyone, the whole staff and students excited to have us observe and get involved in their classes.
One particular individual sticks in my mind, the head teacher and dedicated worker -sister Harriet- the entire time we were there she was working non stop, organising lessons and teaching her classes, preparing food for us, making beds, doing dishes, one of those people who just never seem to stop working! I commented to her about it on our second night and her reply has really stuck in my mind, a comment that displayed a deep faith and awesome attitude towards service… ‘this is the gift that God has given me’.
Harriet didn’t accept any personal compliments, didn’t complain about her workload, didn’t request any help, her attitude was so simple and so amazing, God had given her the ability to work and therefore work she would.
In our short visit to Bukigai we shared awesome fellowship with our brethren and sisters we read the bible together, prayed together, played charades by torchlight, sung many songs together and danced for joy.
The beautiful students are well cared for and educated and a sharp contrast is evident between them and other children in the area. God is at work in this place.
