Are you an “Agent for Christ?” You would be, if you attended the Youth Gathering weekend this August! Such was the title of the studies led by Sister Deb Lea, which included an in-depth questionnaire that helped each attendee identify their talents, as well as interactive discussions on how to put these talents into practice. The feedback we received from the youth was that they were encouraged and motivated to more actively use their individual, unique strengths in serving and glorifying our heavenly Father. Sister Deb went to a great deal of trouble to make the studies practical & therefore memorable, even putting up yellow “crime scene tape” across restricted areas!
Sister Deb was assisted in her efforts by the rest of the P2P team, consisting of Sister Judy MacKinnon, Sister Jeanne Ploetz, Brother William DeFord and Adam Ross. The local hosts were Bro Michael & Sis Lilandi Furstenburg, Bro Hendri & Sis Liezl Viljoen & Bro Llewellyn Scheepers.
As hosts we very much believe that “idle hands are the devils workshop” and so we strive to keep the attendees productively occupied as much as possible. This was achieved through various fun activities, such as a biblical treasure hunt, obstacle course, soccer, swimming, dancing, numerous group games, and a series of challenges called “minute to win it”. These are deceptively simple challenges which you need to complete within a minute – leading to loads of laughter and leaving the more competitive youths with something to practice for next time!
We also included a half hour “praise session” before each study session, which we all enjoyed very much. The youth have strong, vibrant voices and are not shy to lift up their voices in praise to our Father! The entire weekend was driven by an atmosphere of goodwill, co-operation, respect and sincere appreciation of the blessing that is the time together with good friends, and away from worldly cares.
We were delighted to have youth from the Kempton Park, Yeoville, Aphiwe and Kensington ecclesias attend, as well as one girl from the Bible Club at the Tswelopele Good News Centre in Boksburg. These camps are some of the very few opportunities that everyone gets to be together and they all arrive very excited and leave in tears. How wonderful it will be in the Kingdom when we are no longer kept apart by earthly inconveniences such as a lack of transport or funds!
We are very grateful to the P2P team for raising funds that enabled us to subsidize the accommodation costs of the camp and to Many Seeds Ministries for sponsoring the meals provided at the camp. Without God’s provision in these ways we would not be able to host these camps, which are so encouraging and so beneficial to the spiritual growth of our youth members.
We leave you with what became the “theme verse” of the camp: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
With love in Christ
