We hosted a Holiday club for the children around the church hall area during the holidays that just passed. We handed out 400 flyers and painted a sign which was hung at the entrance of the church building. We had a good response and had more children come than we expected. We had a car pick up some kids from a township 35km away, another car picked up a group of kids from a township 6km away and then we had the visitor’s 3 children come. Many friends from the childrens’ schools also attended..
We started off every day with a skit and Bro. Rick taught the kids a memory verse. Sis Liezl then sang a song with the kids. Bro Wilfred and Bro Cam gave the lessons. Sis Sonya was in charge of the crafts and had help from Bro. Sivu and some interested friends. We had Sis. Mandy and Margie and Gail make a delicious lunch for the children; before they got to eat, they had a fantastic work out session by Bro. Hendri who played various games with them.
On the first day, we had 25 children. Many children didn’t know one another so we had name tags for everyone so they could start learning one another’s names. The lesson and craft on the first day were all about light and darkness.
On day 2, the children who came on day 1 brought along some friends, so we had a total of 39 children. The lesson that day was about the skies and seas. Bro. Cam did a brilliant job at teaching the lesson. There were children from ages 6 – 18 which makes it a bit more tricky to keep everyone’s attention all the time.
Day 3 was freezing cold and raining. However, it didn’t affect the number of attendees too much, as we had 32 children attend. We introduced the children to the game “groups”. This involves the children dancing around to music; then when the music stops, we shout out a number, they then have to form a group with that amount of children. If you have too many or too few in your group, then everyone in that group is out of the game; this continues until you only have 2 people left. This is a great game to play indoors on a rainy day. They also played a game where they had to keep balloons in the air with a “parachute”.
Day 4 and 38 children arrived. We learnt of the sun, moon and stars and the fish and birds that were created. The children enjoyed making the origami birds and tying their birds and fish to the strings. We had some very enthusiastic boys who made plenty of birds.
On Day 5 and last day at the holiday club, we had 42 excited and very energetic children come join us once again. We did the last lesson of creation on God creating man. We had so much fun with the craft this day: we made men by filling balloons with maize meal and then drawing faces on them — we had maize meal spray everywhere. Once everything was done, we had lunch and ice cream. Then all the children performed their memory verses and songs to the parents who came to pick them up. The kids also received a certificate of attendance.
In between all the learning and fun we had delicious lunches and many helpers behind the scenes …
