God Is Big

Dear Friends,

God is big.

We are told a lot of things about God in the Bible. God is love. God is one. God is merciful. God is holy. God is pure. God is righteous. God is faithful. God is wise. God is good. God is light. We are never told God is big, but He is.

Now, when I say God is big, I don't mean in physical size. We are never told how big He is in dimension. When I say God is big, I mean He is big in scope, incomprehensible, scratch-your-head-and-furrow-your-eyebrow huge.

Think about this. The Encyclopædia Britannica says that the average human head has between 100,000 and 150,000 hairs on it. Now, let's be conservative and say that there are more heads like mine (a third less than the original equipment) in the 100,000 range. The Bible tells us that God is so in tune with what is going on with us that "the very hairs of your head are all numbered." With the human population on earth roughly 6 billion people, that makes 600,000,000,000,000 hairs that God has numbered. That's huge.

Think that is big, think about this. The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. At that speed, you can travel around the earth 7 times in a second. The nearest star, the Sun, is about 500 light-seconds away. The next closest star is 4.3 light-years away or 270,000 times farther than the Sun. It is estimated that there are about 1 trillion stars in our Milky Way galaxy the furthest stars in it being approximately 100,000 light-years away. To add to that, astronomers estimate there are billions of galaxies. All of this gets lost after a while because it is so incredibly huge. But, the universe is small compared to God because He made it.

Life can be overwhelming. Our problems can seem so huge. On the other hand, we can seem at times to be insignificant. We can feel so small especially in light of the challenges we face. We can start to wonder why in the world would God, the creator of the universe, have any interest whatsoever in us. He does though. As incredible as it may be, He does.

God is never too busy to hear our prayers. We don't steal time from others by praying too much because He can easily take care of us all at once. He is never to tired to help us with a problem. He never loses track of us or forgets about us. There is never a situation that is too complex or serious that He cannot take control of it. God is bigger than all of our problems no matter how great or how small. He cares for us and is working with us for our own good.

For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far he removes our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion for his children, so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him. (Ps. 103:11-13)

So, when you start to feel overwhelmed with minutia of the daily grind, remember – God is big.

Have a great week!
