Speaking Out
January 23, 2000
Dear Friends:
I once read a story about a physics professor from Johns Hopkins who was summoned to give expert testimony at a trial. During the course of the cross examination, the lawyer wanted to know what were his qualifications. The physicist replied, “I am the greatest living expert on the subject under discussion.” A friend of the professor, somewhat shocked at the professor’s unusual display of self acclamation, asked why the professor had responded in such a manner. The professor replied, “Well, what did you expect me to do? I was under oath.”
Well, few of us can claim to be the greatest living expert when it comes to the Bible. However, we are under oath, which we made when we proclaimed our belief in the Lord in baptism, to speak the truth concerning the Kingdom of God and name of Jesus Christ. Too many times, in an effort not to offend or to be politically correct, brethren keep silent or, worse yet, do not speak the truth concerning the Hope of Israel. We allow others to blaspheme the Name and do nothing about it. We let opportunities slip to tell others of the hope we have. We bring up worthless topics with our friends or associates to pass the time rather than speak of the things which bring life eternal. This week’s exhortation is to speak out. Let others know where you stand. Do not be ashamed of the gospel of Christ. Speak out humbly and in the spirit of Christ of the things which you hold dear.
All the while, remember the old adage that “actions speak louder than words.” Speak out loud and clear in words and deeds.
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” (1 Peter 3:15,16 NIV)
“…for it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” (Rom. 10:10)
Have a great week!
