The Answer to the Question
September 5, 1999
Dear Friends:
If the Bible was an answer to a question, what would that question be?
Although we could come up with many reasonable questions, the one which comes to mind is the one asked by Pharaoh – "Who is the Lord…?" (Ex. 5:2)
How then can the Bible be said to be an answer to the question of "Who is the Lord?" The response begins in the Book of Genesis and ends in the Book of Revelation. From the start of the Bible, we begin to slowly understand who God is, what His purpose is and what he expects of us.
With the advent of Jesus, mankind's understanding of God moves forward at a dramatic pace. We can see the love of God and the character of God in a man – Jesus Christ. We see this so clearly that when asked by his disciples to show them the Father, Jesus states , "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, show us the Father?" (John 14:9) After spending 3 ½ years with him, Jesus expected them to understand the answer to the question of "Who is the Lord?" He had plainly demonstrated to them through his actions the character, plan and ideal that is God.
Not only did Jesus, show us who God was in his life, he demanded that we do so likewise. He came to shine the light of God in the world. He tells us that "Ye are the light of the world…Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (Matt. 5:14-16) When people in the world observe God's believing children, they should see, in some less than perfect form, the heavenly Father. They should see the answer to the question "Who is the Lord?"
What answer are we giving to the question – "Who is the Lord?"
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. (1 Peter 3:15 NIV)
Have a great week!
