The Jamaica Project
Overview of the Jamaica Project

The Jamaica Project has several goals:

  • To find and implement a successful and workable preaching model for Jamaica
  • To encourage and support our brethren in Jamaica
  • To develop preaching skills and experience among brethren in North America
  • To develop the local ecclesias so that they can be thriving and self-sustaining
  • To put this model into effect across the country
  • To help the Jamaican brethren improve their life skills and well-being

To date we have been blessed with eight baptisms and numerous more who are interested.

Our plan has been to send small teams of people to Port Maria. We are in the process of selectively expanding this beyond Port Maria. The team has the opportunity to create their own program whether preaching or pastoral. For example, a team could do one of the following:

  • Advertise and conduct public lectures in the evening. The days could be spent in passing out handbills. This could be a Learn to Read the Bible Effectively seminar, for example.
  • Do fun activities (soccer, tag, etc.) with the children along with some simple Bible stories.
  • Conduct classes for the Jamaican women to help with their parenting skills or conducting classes with the children (both in the day or during the evening lectures).
  • Hold a vacation Bible school for the children during the day in the summer or in the evening during the school year.
  • Conduct one-on-one Bible study sessions with baptismal candidates.
  • Hand out tracks in Port Maria and engage individuals in Bible conversations with an aim to getting them to come out to meeting.
  • Visiting people at the local hospital or orphanage.

We have found that the "touch and teach" preaching model works well in Jamaica. The basic idea is that people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. This being the case, the most effective programs have been those which incorporated a lot of "touch" (community service projects, helping with the children, etc.) with the "teach" (seminars, classes, etc.).

As you can see from the above examples, the range of activities is not limited at all. Simply submit your plan to us and we will review it before you go to make sure it falls within the aims of the ecclesia and within Jamaican cultural paradigms. Preaching is a lot more than our traditional public lecture approach. Think about the things Jesus did when he was preaching in Israel for inspiration.
